IT WAS ANOTHER TOUGH WEEKEND FOR THE
BEARS SOFTBALL TEAM.
U-N-C GOT SWEPT IN A DOUBLE-HEADER BY
PORTLAND STATE SATURDAY AT GLORIA RODRIGUEZ FIELD.
(vo)
THE VIKINGS WON GAME ONE 12 TO FOUR
BEHIND A STRONG START FROM ALYSSA BURK.
P-S-U BATTED AROUND IN BACK-TO-BACK
INNINGS, PUTTING UP CROOKED NUMBERS IN BOTH FRAMES.
BEARS STARTER VALERIE VIDAL STRUGGLED
THROUGH TWO PLUS INNINGS, ALLOWING FOUR RUNS.
U-N-C FINALLY ANSWERED IN THE BOTTOM OF
THE FOURTH ON RACHEL JOHNSON’S R-B-I SINGLE, AND THE BEARS TRIED TO KEEP THE
GAME FROM ENDING IN THE EIGHT-RUN RULE.
THEY SCORED THREE IN THE BOTTOM OF THE
FIFTH, HIGHLIGHTED BY R-B-I DOUBLES BY KALEY GARCIA AND LAUREN PAIGE.
BUT THE RALLY FELL SHORT, GIVING THE
VIKINGS THE 12 TO FOUR WIN.
GAME TWO WAS A PITCHING DUEL, WITH BURK
AND VIDAL SQUARING OFF AGAIN.
BOTH PITCHERS THREW COMPLETE GAMES, AND
IT WAS VIDAL’S 17TH OF THE SEASON.
U-N-C TOOK A ONE-NOTHING LEAD IN THE
SECOND ON RACHEL JOHNSON’S SOLO HOME RUN, AND ADDED ANOTHER RUN IN THE THIRD.
THE BEARS LED TWO TO ONE IN THE SEVENTH,
BUT THE VIKINGS SCORED TWO WITH TWO OUTS TO EARN THE COMEBACK WIN.

WITH THE SERIES LOSS, THE BEARS ARE NOW
ONLY ONE GAME OVER 500 AT 23 AND 22.
THEY REMAIN ON THE ROAD WITH A SERIES AT
NORTH DAKOTA THIS WEEKEND.
