The
University of Northern Colorado softball team lost to Colorado State University
9-4 Tuesday in Fort Collins.
Kaylynn
Pierce got the win for the Rams, her first decision of the season. Valerie
Vidal took the loss for the Bears, but her record still sits at an impressive
5-3.
Northern
Colorado got out to an early lead in the top of the first when Lauren Paige’s RBI
groundout brought home Madi Schmidt, and UNC led 1-0.
After
allowing two baserunners through the first two innings, Vidal gave up a run in
the third on Haley Donaldson’s sac fly, tying the game at one.
CSU led off
the next inning with back-to-back homers from Hannah McCorkhill and Madison
Kilcrease. Colorado State added another run on a UNC error, giving them a 4-1
lead.
“[Vidal]
needs to go to her power or go-to pitches for the majority of the time,” head
coach Shana Easley said. “We got away from that during the middle of the game.”
The Rams extended their lead to 6-1 in the
fifth on two RBI’s from Pierce, showing her versatility.
Northern
Colorado closed the gap in the sixth, first on an RBI double by Jordyn Wiatrak.
Emma Brockmann drove in two more with a single, cutting the deficit to 6-4.
Paige
replaced Vidal to begin the bottom of the sixth, but didn’t fare much better.
Colorado State put together three consecutive singles to get a run back,
followed by an RBI groundout and another RBI from McCorkhill, making it a 9-4
lead.
“I think our
conservativeness through the middle of the game cost us several runs,” Easley
said. “We weren’t playing as aggressive as we have been lately.”
With the loss, the Bears fall to an even 8-8
on the season. The Rams improve to an impressive 8-1 with the win.
Northern
Colorado travels to Fayetteville, Arkansas, for the Razorback Invitational,
March 2-4.
