MOTHER NATURE MUST NOT BE A BASEBALL FAN.
U-N-C HAD TO RESCHEDULE ITS HOME-OPENING SERIES TWICE DUE TO THE RECENT SNOW, BUT FINALLY GOT UNDER WAY WITH A DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST MONTANA STATE BILLINGS SUNDAY AT JACKSON FIELD.
(vo)
THE BEARS WON THE FIRST GAME SIX TO ONE, WHICH WAS SHORTENED TO SEVEN INNINGS.
U-N-C GOT OUT TO A ONE TO NOTHING LEAD IN THE TOP OF THE FIRST ON AN R-B-I SINGLE BY EVAN JOHNSON.
THE BEARS MADE IT A FIVE TO NOTHING GAME IN THE SECOND, HIGHLIGHTED BY JACK PAULEY’S TWO R-B-I TRIPLE.
U-N-C’S PITCHING DID THE REST, GIVING THEM A SIX TO ONE VICTORY.
BUT THE SECOND GAME WAS A DIFFERENT STORY, AS THE YELLOWJACKETS GOT OUT TO A THREE TO NOTHING LEAD IN THE TOP OF THE FIRST.
M-S-U-B TACKED ON TWO MORE IN THE THIRD, BUT BRETT MINNICK’S SOLO SHOT AN INNING LATER MADE IT A FIVE TO ONE GAME.
THE BEARS RALLIED IN THE BOTTOM OF THE NINTH BUT FELL SHORT, AS THE YELLOWJACKETS CAME AWAY WITH THE NINE TO FIVE WIN.
MOVING TO GAME THREE, IT SEEMED AS IF M-S-U-B HAD CARRIED THE MOMENTUM INTO SUNDAY, JUMPING OUT TO A THREE TO NOTHING LEAD IN THE TOP OF THE FIRST.
BUT U-N-C QUICKLY SQUASHED THE YELLOWJACKETS’ MOMENTUM, PUTTING UP 11 RUNS IN THE BOTTOM OF THE FIRST.
BRETT MINNICK’S SECOND HOMER IN AS MANY DAYS GAVE THE BEARS THE LEAD, BUT THEY WERE FAR FROM FINISHED.
THE BEARS GOT A RUN ON A BALK OF ALL THINGS, AND PUT UP SIX MORE RUNS IN THE INNING.
AFTER AN INJURY TO CENTER FIELDER AUSTIN MILLER, U-N-C HAD TO FORFEIT THE DESIGNATED HITTER.
IT WORKED OUT PERFECTLY, THOUGH, AS PITCHER CONNOR LEEDHOLM BLASTED HIS FIRST CAREER HOME RUN IN THE THE BOTTOM OF THE FOURTH, GIVING THE BEARS A 14 TO SIX LEAD.

U-N-C ADDED TWO MORE ON MATT BURKART’S TRIPLE IN THE SEVENTH, AND EVENTUALLY CAME AWAY WITH THE VICTORY.
THE BEARS WON THE SERIES TWO GAMES TO ONE, IMPROVING THEIR RECORD TO FOUR AND THREE.
THEY REMAIN AT HOME AS THEY TAKE ON NORTH DAKOTA STATE THIS WEEKEND.
