By Adam Ide
The
University of Northern Colorado hockey team lost in the semifinals of the Big
Mountain Hockey Conference playoffs to Colorado 2-1 Saturday at the Greeley Ice
Haus.
The Bears
were shut out through the first two periods, allowing two goals in the first
but holding the Buffs scoreless in the second.
CU opened the
scoring with just over nine minutes left in the first period, taking a 1-0
lead. Colorado made it a 2-0 game six minutes later, carrying that lead into
the first intermission.
The two
teams were held scoreless in the second and the Buffs carried a 2-0 lead into
the final period.
Northern
Colorado managed to get within one when senior forward Colin Chemlka scored
early in the third period, but UNC wouldn’t score again. Colorado’s goal with
three minutes left in the first period proved to be the game winner.
CU moved on
to the BMHC championship game Sunday at the Budweiser Events Center. They beat
Denver 5-2 to win the championship.
While it
may have been the last home game for the Bears, their season isn’t over yet.
They will play in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II West
Regional playoffs beginning Thursday, Feb. 22, at the Weber Ice Sheet in Ogden,
Utah.
